Inquirer 7 top UAAP 80 women’s volleyball players: Week 1

first_imgDon’t miss out on the latest news and information. With all that diving and playing without having the opportunity to score, it’s a job that hardly draws attention. And yet Dawn Macandili showed that the defensive position is a post that turns coal to diamonds.Asia’s second best libero showed her worth for the Lady Spikers when she anchored the defense of the defending champions and cleaned up when her taller teammates found difficulty against the monstrosity that Baron described.Macandili, who stands at exactly five feet, recorded 19 excellent receptions 35 excellent digs as she dueled with the no.7 player on this list.7. Cherry Rondina (University of Santo Tomas, outside hitter)She’s the monster that pushed La Salle to its limit.Cherry Rondina was hell bent on showing the entire UAAP community that she’s a force to be reckoned with and she will stop at nothing to prove her devotion to UST.The Golden Tigress scored 28 points, the most in the opening weekend of Season 80, as she continually punished La Salle despite UST losing the game in five sets. This offensive display left La Salle bamboozled and the team’s figureheads were in unison that Rondina has been unleashed. Enter another clutch lady.University of the Philippines squandered a two-set advantage over Season 79 pawn University of the East in the two teams’ first match of 2018.The Lady Maroons were up two sets to nothing and just needed to close things out in the third set, but the final chapter just had to be written in the fifth and deciding period.UP could’ve ultimately lost its first game had it not for Molde’s heroic to lift the Lady Maroons 25-19, 25-13, 21-25, 16-25, 15-8.Molde first sent the ball down UE’s sideline to give UP the 13-8 lead in the fifth, and after Roselle Baliton hit net that put the Lady Maroons at match point, the former Rookie of the Year sent another one towards the Lady Warriors’ way to finish the deal.UP’s hitter finished with 20 points, two less than what captain Diana Carlos did, but Molde did show the guts in the end game.6. Dawn Macandili (De La Salle University, libero)The libero position was never considered the glamour spot in volleyball. Photo by Tristan Tamayo/INQUIRER.netThe OG stat sheet stuffer hasn’t lost a beat since filling up every conceivable numerical category back in Season 79.And Bernadeth Pons once again displayed her versatility in Far Eastern University’s season opener win against Ateneo, 19-25, 25-21, 18-25, 25-20, 15-9.Her 14 total points comprised of 12 spikes and two blocks but it wasn’t just in the offensive side of things that Pons made an impact. The FEU captain had 13 excellent digs, the same as Ateneo’s libero Jenelle Lo, and 16 excellent receptions and that mark was four more than what Lo recorded.3. Jaja Santiago (National University, middle blocker)Let’s head into the “if” part of this list.Back in Season 79, this list contained several “what ifs” and that won’t go anywhere this Season 80 as Jaja Santiago had the first “if” performance this year.Santiago had 16 points in National University’s victory over Adamson University, 25-15, 25-23, 16-25, 25-13, in what turned out to be the only match in the opening weekend that didn’t go to the fifth set. Now, Santiago is a consistent 20-point scorer and she did win the Best Attacker, Best Blocker, and Best Scorer awards in Season 79 and that is where the “if” suddenly gets its footing. “When the game was over I told her ‘you’re a monster,’” said La Salle’s Kianna Dy.“I think Rondina’s aggressiveness sometimes takes away our confidence when we prepare for a block,” said Baron.“Before there was [three-time MVP] Alyssa [Valdez], but now there’s Rondina. “We don’t have someone like Rondina, UST has, she will do whatever it takes to lift her team up.” Globe Business launches leading cloud-enabled and hardware-agnostic conferencing platform in PH Slow and steady hope for near-extinct Bangladesh tortoises John Lloyd Cruz a dashing guest at Vhong Navarro’s wedding She’s the defending MVP and she rightfully held fort for her queendom.Mary Joy Baron showed the poise in leading defending champion De La Salle over University of Santo Tomas in five sets, 25-20, 17-25, 25-22, 15-25, 15-8.Baron’s name was in every scoring category for the Lady Spikers as her 19 total points composed of 12 spikes, five blocks, and two service aces. That quiet production perfectly exemplified her equally silent approach to UAAP royalty in Season 79.2. Bernadeth Pons (Far Eastern University, outside hitter)ADVERTISEMENT Volleyball fever has finally struck and with three of the first four games ending in five sets, the mercury just went haywire. The eight teams of the UAAP all had their first taste of the competition and here are the best seven players from the first week of Season 80 volleyball.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSWATCH: Drones light up sky in final leg of SEA Games torch runSPORTSLillard, Anthony lead Blazers over ThunderSPORTSMalditas save PH from shutout1. After a dunkfest in Game 1, Cavs must slow Warriors at rim

And there is no doubt he would have been eager to go against the team that jettisoned him to the Mavericks to make room for Durant. But Bogut checked into a game against Miami for his Cavs debut, collided with Heat rookie Okaro White, and broke his left leg. Season over. So while he was tweeting Thursday about Santa Claus and Australian Rules Football, Durant was dunking on the sort of nonexistent defense typically seen at an All-Star Game and not the NBA Finals.Durant had six dunks, all in the first half.— The first came off a great cut to beat James.— The second, James got no help after he swiped unsuccessfully at the ball.— The third, James slipped and again no help came.— The fourth, Kyrie Irving didn’t stop the ball as Durant sailed past.— The fifth, Shaun Livingston faked the Cavs out and Durant was left all alone. “I think that’s how Cleveland is going to approach it, make it a physical game,” Michael Cooper, now the coach of the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream who went through some epic Lakers-Celtics battles as a player in the 1980s, said before the series began. “Golden State wants a finesse game.”Finesse won Game 1.And after a team has been blown out in the playoffs, history shows that team typically tries to make a statement in Game 2 that things will be different.Funny thing is for Cleveland, the Cavs had a way to do just that three months ago in former Golden State center Andrew Bogut. Problem is, they only had him for 58 seconds.Let’s clear up a misconception: Golden State’s biggest undoing on the way to blowing that 3-1 lead in last season’s NBA Finals was not Draymond Green’s Game 5 suspension for connecting with LeBron James’ midsection.ADVERTISEMENT Pagasa: Storm intensifies as it nears PAR Don’t miss out on the latest news and information. They capitalized,” James said. “And we get an opportunity to get a couple days to see what they did and see what we did wrong and how we can be better in Game 2.”To be fair, playing the Warriors is a slew of pick-your-poison decisions. Overcommit to the lane, and their shooters will tee off from 3-point range. Overplay the perimeter, and the rim is undefended. They’ve won 28 of their last 29 games. They’re 80-15 this season. They could post the second-best record in NBA history when counting the regular season and playoffs, behind only the 1995-96 Bulls.Today’s NBA isn’t the sort of league where someone is going to egregiously foul Durant or any other Warrior to send some sort of foolish overly physical message, nor should it be. Though Kevin McHale’s aggressive at-the-rim takedown of Kurt Rambis in the 1984 title matchup remains a quintessential moment in postseason lore (and swung that Celtics-Lakers series totally Boston’s way). And this series is a long way from over. James has been on the losing end of Game 1 of the Finals seven times in eight tries. He was down 1-0 in all three of the series where he went on to win a ring. Not even a 3-1 deficit last year was enough to faze him.But someone from Cleveland had better find a way to make life tougher for the Warriors going forward starting on Sunday.Or else a lot more dunks are coming.Sports Related Videospowered by AdSparcRead Next BREAKING: Cop killed, 11 hurt in Misamis Oriental grenade blast MOST READ BSP survey: PH banks see bright horizon amid dark global recession clouds And easy isn’t supposed to happen, especially not at the rim in the NBA Finals.Forget all the things that Cleveland did wrong offensively in Game 1, the poor shooting and the 20 turnovers and how the bench basically contributed nothing.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSSEA Games: Biñan football stadium stands out in preparedness, completionSPORTSPrivate companies step in to help SEA Games hostingSPORTSMalditas save PH from shutoutThe Cavs can score. Seattle’s Sue Bird shines in 10th WNBA All-Star Game

You don’t want anybody to get hurt, but you also want to play with a certain intensity to show off your athleticism and I thought we were able to do that,” Moore said.Moore scored 23 points and Ogwumike added 22 points as the West outlasted the East 130-121 in the WNBA All-Star Game on Saturday. So it was nice to see that love back to her and you can tell it’s a mutual love,” Taurasi said. The 36-year-old Bird seemed more interested in involving others than trying to take control of the game. She regularly bypassed her own shots to provide layup chances for Moore, Ogwumike and Candace Parker, and finished with a game-record 11 assists and eight points. The veteran West squad, with 55 total All-Star Game selections on its roster, pulled away after a close first half. Moore made 9 of 17 shots, including five 3-pointers, while Ogwumike made 11 of 15 attempts off the bench.Moore was named the game’s Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive All-Star Game. The competiveness started to emerge late as the East tried to rally from a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit, but Bird’s wide open 3-pointer with 4:05 left to push the West’s lead back to 11. She threw her hands in the air after the make, following an underwhelming performance in the 3-point contest.“I’ve got no complaints,” Bird said. “Except the 3-point contest.
