IONITY Eases LongDistance EV Travel in Europe

first_img Four of the world’s top vehicle makers have partnered to bring high-power charging to electric vehicles across Europe.The BMW Group, Daimler AG, Ford Motor Company, and Volkswagen Group last week launched IONITY, a joint venture promising to “make long-distance journeys easier” for EV owners.An initial 20 stations—located every 75 miles along major roads in Germany, Norway, and Austria—are set to open this year. The network will expand to more than 100 stations in 2018.AdChoices广告“We are here to build a network of reliable and powerful charging stations along major routes across Europe,” according to the company website.With a capacity of up to 350 kW per charging point, the “comfortable to use” terminals employ the European charging standard to facilitate multiple and varied vehicles.The high-power charging stations, for example, are capable of juicing up the Mission E—Porsche’s first purely electric sports car, expected in 2019—to 80 percent (a range of nearly 250 miles) in 15 minutes.There is no word on exactly how many cars can power up at once.“The first pan-European HPC network plays an essential role in establishing a market for electric vehicles,” CEO Michael Hajesch said in a statement. “IONITY will deliver our common goal of providing customers with fast charging and digital payment capability, to facilitate long-distance travel.”The firm is working with existing infrastructure owners—including participating companies and political institutions—to determine the best locations for its HPC sites.“The launch of IONITY represents a breakthrough in the move towards a comprehensive rapid charging infrastructure in Europe,” Oliver Blume, chairman of the executive board of partner Porsche AG, said in a statement.“Creating a functioning charging infrastructure is necessary for ensuring electromobility is accepted and further expanded,” he continued. “With the rapid charging network from IONITY, we are ensuring that our customers can use electric cars on long journeys without compromising on convenience.”IONITY did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
